This report constitutes the third volume of the Cultural Landscape Report for the Longfellow National Historic Site. Volume 1: Site History was completed in 1993 by Catherine Evans. Volume 2: Analysis of Integrity and Significance, completed in 1999, was underway at the time of this publication. Each section of the report contains a significant amount of detail regarding the history and significance of the Longfellow landscape, as well as the features, materials, and spaces that contribute to its significance. The property is recognized as nationally significant for its association with Washington and Longfellow, its design expressions (architecture and landscape design), and for its association with important events or trends in American history (American revolution and the colonial revival). The treatment section articulates a preservation strategy for long-term management of the landscape based on its significance, existing conditions, and use. This particular plan takes into consideration concerns related to a project to rehabilitate the carriage house, visitor access and safety, and broader issues related to the interpretation of a site with a long period of significance. The preliminary draft treatment plan ultimately provides recommendations related to the preferred treatment, rehabilitation.
