This report section contains the architectural data for the Arlington House Historic Structure Report. It presents the administrative data about the structure and the presumed structural history, using historical information as well as data discovered through fabric investigation. Existing conditions and recommendations for treatment are given for each room or area of the house. Arlington House, the Robert E. Lee National Memorial, is located on a prominent hill across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial and Washington, DC. The house is associated with the Washington, Custis, and Lee families. Plans for the house are attributed to George Hadfield, a young English architect in charge of construction of the capitol. The north wing was built in 1802 and the south wing followed two years later. The large center section with portico was finished from 1817 to 1819. The chronology of historic events documented in this report begins in 1778, when the tract of land on which Arlington House was built was purchased by George Washington Parke Custis' father, John Parke Custis. Because of its historic associations with famous Americans and its architectural significance as one of the nation's finest examples of the nineteenth century's "revival" periods, Arlington House possesses integrity and authenticity which justify a high level of investigation and preservation treatment.
