This report describes the structural development of Pier 1 and Pier 2 while placing that development in a historical context. These are a few of the structures located on the waterfront at the Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston National Historic Park. The development of the waterfront at the Charlestown Navy Yard began in 1802, and the configuration at the time of this report was the result of nearly two centuries of construction and shore improvements. This report describes those changes, with particular focus on the development of Pier 1 and 2. Pier 1 is a solid wharf bounded by a concrete arch zone that extends along the eastern side and outboard end of the pier. It was one of the earliest concrete marine structures built at the Charlestown Navy Yard. Construction on Pier 2 was started in 1905. It is a pile and timber wharf located immediately to the east, extending about 500 feet into the Charles River. The report describes details of these structures, comparative data on wharf construction technology in the region, and building materials, as well as the proposed work to the structures.
