This administrative data section concerns the Paw Paw Tunnel, located on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal about 28.4 miles downstream of Cumberland. It can be used as an interpretive device, as it reflects the skill of canal engineers, the perseverance of canal management, and a remnant of a historic way of life blended with the natural setting of the Potomac Valley. The Paw Paw Tunnel was within one of three sections of the canal that were selected for rewatering in the Master Plan. Signs and markers, tours, and exhibits would interpret the history, construction, and operation of the canal as well as the geology of the area. Proposed construction activity included reconstruction of portions of the towpath that had failed and replacement of the lining in the tunnel that was damaged by the freezing and thawing of water seeping through its walls.
