This Architectural Data section of the Historic Structures Report for the Paw Paw Tunnel describes the existing conditions, required treatment, and remaining research. The Paw Paw Tunnel is 3,117 feet in length, located 155.2 miles along the towpath above tidewater in Georgetown, Washington, DC, and less than two miles from the town of Paw Paw, West Virginia. The tunnel and approaches were designed by Charles B. Fisk, Chief Engineer for the Canal Company, and construction began in June 1836. After a pause, it was completed and was in operation by 1850. Section I details the techniques and labor used in construction. Section II describes the work needed to stabilize the tunnel and approaches and restore them to a safe condition, suitable for interpretation. These repairs and modifications address issues relating to seepage, lighting, surface treatment, and masonry repairs. Sketches show the tunnel profile, wooden towpath in the tunnel interior, and shafts.
