The purpose of this report is to present all of the documentary evidence that has been located pertaining to the construction of Guard Lock Number 4, Stop Lock Number 4, and the flume associated with the Guard Lock. Guard Lock Number 4 served two functions for the operation of the C & O Canal. It fed water from the impoundment above Dam 4 to the 23.2 miles of canal between the Guard Lock and Harpers Ferry, and it provided ingress and egress between the slackwater above the dam and the canal. The guard lock is located one mile and 320 yards above Dam 4. The report section provides the historical data for the Guard Lock Number 4 and Dam 4 Complex, covering construction history and construction specifications for the Guard Lock Number 4, Guard Bank, Pier Head, Stop Gate and Control Gate, and sections of canal trunk. Other documentary sources are cited as evidence of the construction, such as maps or records. Combined, this documentary evidence could be used for rewatering and interpreting the canal.
