This section of the report addresses engineering data associated with the operation and preservation of this section of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Little or no maintenance had occurred since operation ceased in 1924, and many of the canal characteristics deteriorated due to vandalism, flooding, or other causes. The canal and its appurtenances have engineering and historical significance, although they did not exist in a utilitarian or functional state. This report recommends that efforts be made to preserve the engineering significance of the canal, in addition to the historical character of the canal and its structures. The section of the canal that is the subject of this report was selected for its accessibility, recreational opportunity, and potential for future restoration if stabilized. The initial step, and what is shown on the accompanying plans, would stabilize the structures and is not intended to be a restoration. Drawings of proposed improvements and photographs are included.
