This report section contains historic data pertaining to culverts between Lock No. 40 and Dam No. 4 (culverts 114, 115, 116, and 118) that were built by the Canal Company. This document is intended to present the material that has been gathered pertaining to the construction of the culverts, and it would be used to guide basic stabilization of the structures. Numerous tributaries flow into the Potomac River, and the smaller streams were passed under the canal by culverts of varying dimensions. As was the case for other canal structures on the Chesapeake and Ohio, a detailed specification was prepared for the culverts to describe the materials and methods of construction. Details of actual construction are not reflected in company records because the culverts generally did not present as many engineering problems as other major canal structures. The function of the culverts as structures is necessary for the canal banks, berm, towpath, and trunk to retain continuity. The structures would be primarily functional, except that the exposed walls also reflect historic masonry treatment. The report covers general and specific construction of these culverts with photos and recommendations.
