This report section provides historic data pertaining to Culverts 126 and 127, between Lock 43 and Lock 44, of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The information in this report attempts to present documentary evidence on the two historic structures in order to guide their restoration. During the canal construction, a vast number of culverts were built in order to pass streams, creeks, and in some cases roads under the canal bed and towpath. The culverts that are the subject of this report were in poor condition, to the extent that it could be necessary to repair and reconstruct the culverts in order to restore this section of towpath. Although descriptions of specific culverts was scarce, their construction followed general specifications. The report presents the general and specific details of construction that are known about these two culverts, which were completed around late 1833. It is recommended that both culverts be restored to their original condition, both to permit visitors to view an accurate example of this type of architecture and to all a restoration of the portions of the canal and towpath over the culverts.
