In 1976, National Heritage Corporation, at the direction of the National Park Service, Denver Service Center, provided archeological monitoring of construction-related activity at the Abner Cloud House in Georgetown, District of Columbia. The house was constructed in 1801 by Abner Cloud, a miller by profession, and is the earliest existing structure within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The construction-related activity involved the complete removal of basement flooring and sub-flooring in preparation for the laying of a concrete floor. The report describes the outcome of the monitoring, presented by area. The findings conclude that a sequence of at least three different configurations has marked the history and use of the structure's basement, although the functional division between storage, kitchen, and entrance hall areas is basic to these configurations.
