Nelson LH. 1959. Historic Structures Report, Architectural Data, Part II - Preparatory to the Restoration of the Archer House, Lot 107, Water Street, Colonial National Historical Park, Yorktown, Virginia. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Eastern Office, Division of Design and Construction
This Historic Structures Report is the second part of the study of the Archer House, and it incorporates some new evidence and a re-evaluation of conclusions cited in the initial survey report. The writer arrived at the site with Buildings Restoration Specialist Gordie Whittington to continue the study and investigation of the Archer House in preparation for stabilization and restoration. The name "Archer Cottage" used in other reports has been changed to "Archer House" to architecturally and historically describe the functional use of the building. It is reasonably certain that it was built as a combination store and residence. There is also evidence that the building was partially destroyed (ca. 1814) and rebuilt (ca. 1820) on the original stone foundations, and there was evidence at the time of writing that the structure had been in the Taylor family until ca. 1840. Although the house was not historically outstanding in itself, it was part of the waterfront scene during the 1781 Siege of Yorktown. The report describes the physical history of the building and provides recommendations for treatment, divided into sub-sections by part of the structure. Cost estimates for the project, measured drawings, and photographs are included.
