This report contains the architectural data section for the restoration of the Dudley Digges House in Yorktown, Virginia. It includes information about the origin of the structure, its architectural design, and comparison to similar buildings. A more thorough evaluation is provided in the Part II report. While certain aspects are common among Colonial Virginia house plans, other characteristics are more unique to this structure. Notable dates in the structure's history are the suspected date of construction, ca. 1760, and the Siege of Yorktown, October 1781. Other alterations and repairs are also described. The preservation history under the National Park Service is described. The NPS gained ownership of the house in 1953, and stabilization work occurred. Investigations were conducted in 1956 in preparation for restoration plans; the project was deferred while more research was accomplished. Architectural descriptions of the interior and exterior are provided, organized by area. The report makes recommendations for the restoration, focusing on the exterior. This would include removing some of the exterior work accomplished during the 1954-55 stabilization and addressing foundation repairs. Includes illustrations and cost estimates.
