Historic Structure Preservation Guide, Ballard House

Staff. 1977. Historic Structure Preservation Guide, Ballard House. Historic Structure Management Plan. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Denver Service Center. Denver, Colorado

The Ballard House is representative of perhaps the majority of homes that once stood in Colonial Yorktown. At the time of this report, it was one of two remaining wood-framed houses to have escaped the fire of 1814. The continued preservation of the building is important to the park for its role in presenting the lives and lifestyles of early colonial citizens. In 1975, the exterior of the house was preserved by the National Park Service using specialists and authentic tools, materials, and techniques. The Ballard House exterior appeared as it did when John Ballard, early Yorktown merchant and public servant, lived in it in 1727. The purpose of this guide is to inform park personnel of the proper preservation procedures to perform housekeeping, repair, and maintenance on the house. The guide provides a list of appropriate materials, suppliers, and techniques to complete repair and maintenance work. This guide is divided into three parts. Part One, Building Preservation and Inspection, describes housekeeping, routine maintenance and cyclic maintenance steps and procedures. Part Two, Construction Data, includes material specifications, the Completion Report, as-built drawings and other information sufficient to carry out routine and cyclic maintenance. Part Three, Supplemental Research Data, provides new research information about the building that was discovered during construction. In addition, a bibliography is included to help assist maintenance personnel solve particular preservation problems not otherwise discussed in this Guide.
