Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This historic structure report concerns The 1876 Bakery (Building no. 10), also referred to as The Old Bakery. The historic building is planned to be an unmanned station, structurally restored with a bake oven, but not refurnished. The third bake house built at Fort Laramie, The 1876 Bakery is one of a very few, if not the only such surviving bakery in historic military posts west of the Mississippi.
