Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This historic structure report concerns The 1876 Bakery (Building no. 10), also referred to as The Old Bakery. The historic building is planned to be an unmanned station, structurally restored with a bake oven, but not refurnished. The third bake house built at Fort Laramie, The 1876 Bakery is one of a very few, if not the only such surviving bakery in historic military posts west of the Mississippi. The report suggests prescribes construction should present the appearance of 1876. This building, as constructed in 1876, contained seven windows, several of which have been filled in with concrete. The concrete fills should be removed, and the windows restored to their original appearance. For complete 1876 authenticity, two doors should appear on the south side and the brick bake ovens should be reconstructed, to support the prominent brick chimney that originally passed through the roof in the eastern half of the building. Roof shingles and timber members should be replaced where necessary. Modern structural techniques and materials, for required strength and economy, should be used where they will not be seen or intrude on the 1876 appearance.
