Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This informal report concern the stabilization of the Old Bakery carried out during the summer of 1950. The third bake house built at Fort Laramie, The 1876 Bakery is one of a very few, if not the only such surviving bakery in historic military posts west of the Mississippi. Of particular note in this report is the development of a formula for lime-concrete used in historic recreations.
