Glen Canyon National Recreation Area for hundreds of miles, from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, encompassing scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history. During October 1985, eight sites within the upper reaches of Cow I Canyon in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GLCA) were stabilized by Nickens and Associates of Montrose, Colorado. The work was completed as part of the Year 3 requirements of a multiyear ruins stabilization program under the terms of National Park Service (NPS) Contract No. CX-1200-3-A074, Modification No. 4. The eight sites, Mud Granary (42KA2685), Tunnel Granary (42KA2686), Perfect Ruin (42KA2687), Covered Pot Alcove (42KA2688), the Watchtower (42KA2690), Seven Step Kiva (42KA2692), Gourd Grotto (42KA2694), and Inaccessible Ruin (42KA2696), were recommended for stabilization as a result of the Year 2 stabilization assessment survye of Cow Canyon. A total of 29 structures and 1 midden area were stabilized during the project. Test excavations were also conducted in the midden area at Perfect Ruin prior to stabilization to determine the extent and nature of the deposits. Most of the structures were in stable condition, although minor areas exhibiting deterioration required attention to prevent future weakening and damage to the structures. This "preventative" stabilization was especially important considering the pristine nature of the sties and their concomitant significance. Recommendations for future management actions and considerations toward continued preservation of the ruins were developed and included within the report as a result of this work.
