This document contains administrative data for the proposed restoration of the Stone House (Building Number 15) at Manassas National Battlefield Park. It is the only extant structure that was actively involved in the Battles of First and Second Manassas (Bull Run). The building also has the distinction of having been used as a field hospital for both battles of Manassas. Located on the northeast corner of the junction of the Warrenton Turnpike (US 29-211) and the Manassas-Sudley Mill Road (Va. 234), the Stone House was caught between opposing fire of infantry and artillery while affording a haven for wounded of both Federal and Confederate soldiers in the first major battle of the Civil War, July 21, 1861. Approximately a year later, August 28-30, 1862, it again became the center of battle as Pope and Lee struggled for the mastery of the field of Second Manassas (Bull Run). As the only existing structure of the First Battle of Manassas, the Stone House occupies a unique interpretive position on the historic battlefield. Fully restored as a tavern converted to a field hospital, this historic structure will interpret, as an exhibit in situ, the care of the wounded in the battles of First and Second Manassas. The report briefly describes rehabilitating the exterior, interior, and grounds; funding and operations; uses; and preliminary cost estimates.
