"The history of Guam's built environment is punctuated by episodes of large-scale architectural reconstruction and renewal spurred by colonialism, wartime destruction, and natural disasters. Historic architecture studies are vital for documenting this evolution. However, while previous studies have concentrated on individual buildings and districts, the present study focuses on much of the southern half of the island of Guam with the aim of identifying and characterizing the range, number, and locations of historic architectural properties that are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). To accomplish this goal, a reconnaissance-level architectural history survey of Guam's seven southern villages was conducted on behalf of the Guam Historic Resources Division through a Historic Preservation Fund Grant provided by the National Park Service. The survey involved the evaluation of buildings, sites, structures, and objects over 50 years of age (built on or before 1964) that are significant to the history of Guam's built environment. Twenty-three historic architectural properties, all from the post-World War II Period, were documented within southern Guam's historical settlement communities. Six of these properties were determined eligible for listing on the NRHP. The results demonstrates a rebirth of architectural design, particularly in the domestic sphere, in the post-World War II and post-Typhoon Karen era on Guam."
