The purpose of the Brawner Farm Cultural Landscape Report is to investigate and record the site’s historic and existing landscape conditions, to assess the integrity of the current landscape, and to make treatment recommendations for its future development and interpretation. The 1983 General Management Plan for the park identifies Brawner Farm as the primary interpretive site for the Second Battle of Manassas." The battle fought here briefly but violently disrupted the uneventful daily life of this small, not very prosperous farm. The CLR attempts to determine what remains of the landscape conditions existing at the time of the war. It also analyzes the historic use of this site as a typical agricultural landscape of the Virginia Piedmont. The Cultural Landscape Report for the Brawner Farmstead was written over a period of four years, with research beginning in 2001. The treatment presents the house as the place from which visitors will begin their exploration of the Second Battle of Manassas battlefield. The site is referred to as the “Brawner Farm” after the tenant, John C. Brawner, who occupied the farm at the time of the Second Battle of Manassas. The farm was owned by Augusta Douglas, the widow of George A. Douglas (d. 1856), who had inherited it from his grandfather in 1846.
