Bai Er a Olilai
2009. Bai Er a Olilai. Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Arts and Culture, Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs
From the brochure: "Ngellau is one of the four villages in Ngiwal. The meeting house is called Bai er a Olilai, the Council of Chiefs is Ngara Olilai, and the mangrove channel is called Iliuang. There are two stones on the platform of the meeting house, Bai er a Olilai. Feature 11 is a large stone platform for Bai er a Olilai. The platform is elevated more than a meter height except for its western section and part of the north side that are almost level with the ground surface. On top of the platform is a bai slot with two hearths and eight stone posts at each side of the bai slot. Two stepping stones were noted along the east side of the bai slot. Interesting features including Imeungs el Bad el Olkael er a Udoud which are on top of the platform and to the east of the bai slot. Imeungs el Bad is a mortar basalt rock with a deep depression in the middle. It has split in half, but is still in place. Beneath the mortar are small rocks that support it. A small round rock also sits on top of the mortar. There is a metal sign next to it with the oral history. Next to Imeungs el Bad to the northwest is an upright monolith called Olekael er a Udoud. It has an approximate height of a meter. The rock has split in half down its height, but is still in place. One fourth of the way down from the top is a thin groove that, according to oral history, was a measurement of a piece of bead money called Terruaol." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Arts and Culture, Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
