This Cultural Landscape Report addresses the history, existing conditions, and preservation recommendations for Camp Misty Mount at Catoctin Mountain Park. The cabin camp was one of three "organized group camps" built in the Catoctin Mountains by the National Park Service with Works Progress Administration labor in the 1930s, as part of a recreational demonstration area (RDA). RDAs were a product of New Deal programs and one way the NPS was involved in national recreational planning in the early 1930s. In 1989, Camp Misty Mount was listed on the National Register as a historic district, significant for its association with historic events of the New Deal and for its rustic architecture and naturalistic setting. Volume 1: Part One attempts to more clearly define the interrelated programs, agencies, and objectives of the New Deal as related to the RDA program. Part Two begins the discussion of the Catoctin project, covering a period of about two-and-a-half years that preceded the construction of the first camp (Camp Misty Mount). Part Three is the narrative history of Camp Misty Mount, from first construction late in 1936 to present. Volume 2: Part Four describes the current appearance of the camp and analyzes the character-defining features. Part Five discusses the significance and integrity of the camp and the selection of a preservation strategy. Part Six details the recommendations for the preservation treatment of the camp and its features.
