This Part II Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) expands the understanding of the historic property and its cultural landscape, identifying features that contribute to its significance and interpretive potential and providing treatment strategies that support long-term management of the Janis-Ziegler House cultural landscape, one of the historic properties located within Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park. This follows the 2024 completion of the Part I CLR for the park as a whole. The Part II CLR treatment plan for the Janis-Ziegler House property provides preservation strategies and specific recommendations for the long-term management of the cultural landscape based on its significance, existing condition, and use. The treatment plan includes a discussion of the overall management objectives for the historic landscape as documented in the Part I CLR, the Janis-Ziegler HSR, and reports on previous archeological surveys. The treatment plan addresses the issues, concerns, and needs identified by National Park Service park and regional personnel during meetings and reviews of the Part I CLR that occurred over the course of the project, as well as feedback received by the park from any stakeholders and visitors to the site. The Janis-Ziegler House is one of the four French colonial properties protected as part of Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park. The Janis family was among the first families to relocate to the new Ste. Genevieve townsite. Patriarch Nicolas Janis (1720–1804), a French Canadian originally from Quebec, and his wife, Marie-Louise Thaumur LaSource (1737–1791), settled in Kaskaskia before relocating permanently to Ste. Genevieve in the late 1780s, following the 1785 flood.
