This is a summary report for the 2012 peregrine falcon nesting season. After last year’s failure at all five nesting site locations it was good to have had some successful fledging occur this year. Though May 21st is noted to be the start of the peregrine watch, it is noted that, ‘Since nesting season usually starts in March, Acadia’s Resource Management team began irregular monitoring in February to start determining nesting behaviors at the different sites.” Note was made that a “mild winter may have pre-empted the nesting season on the island, with peregrines seen as early as mid-February at Valley Cove.” However, observations of the Valley Cove location after a storm showed no nesting and nesting failed at that location for the year. It is noted that the peregrines from Valley Cove may have chosen the Beech Cliff site for nesting, but no bands were documented on any of these birds. It is noted the Precipice failed to have successful nesting though individuals and behaviors indicated attempts at nesting. Beech Cliffs successfully fledged chicks in 2012. Jordan Cliffs failed to have nesting. Ironbound Island is noted to have fledged potentially three chicks, but because of the inaccessibility of the site observations are difficult.
