Dunes Monitoring Protocols - Dynamic, Stability and Integrity of the Gypsum Dune Field: Chihuahuan Desert Network, White Sands National Park
Chihuahuan Desert Network, Mateljak J , Isley M , Bozek M. Dunes Monitoring Protocols - Dynamic, Stability and Integrity of the Gypsum Dune Field: Chihuahuan Desert Network, White Sands National Park. 2012. National Park Service
As part of their long-term monitoring programs, the Sonoran Desert Network and Chihuahuan Desert Network identified terrestrial vegetation and soils as high-priority vital signs for monitoring. The goals of this monitoring are to determine status and trends in (1) vegetative cover of common native and non-native perennial plant species and a small suite of non-native annual plant species, (2) frequency of uncommon native and non-native species in terrestrial ecosystems, (3) density of columnar cacti and ocotillo, (4) soil cover and cover and frequency of biological soil crusts, (5) surface soil aggregate stability, and (6) soil bulk density.
