Fort Hancock is part of the Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area. On the entire peninsula of Sandy Hook, there are approximately 300 structures reflecting Light House Board, Lifesaving Service, and United States Army activity from 1764 through the 1970s. These structures are of varying levels of historic and architectural significance. This Historic Structure Assessment Report surveys the Officer's Quarters (Bldg. 20) at Fort Hancock, providing photographs, floor plans, statements of deficiency, and preservation recommendations. Building #20 was built in 1899 and designed to house a hospital steward. It retains much of its original appearance and is now occupied by NOAA. This building is a two-story structure with full basement and attic. Walls are buff brick covered with stucco.
