Glen Canyon National Recreation Area for hundreds of miles, from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, encompassing scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history. This report discusses the Preservation/Stabilization needs at Defiance House (42SA598), Forgotten Canyon and Three Roof Ruin (42KA207), Escalante Canyon in Glen Canyon NRA (Figure 1). These sites consist of prehistoric standing structural remains that represent the Kayenta and Mesa Verde Branches of the Anasazi Culture. They are roughly assigned an occupation date of late PII–PIII. These sites were initially recorded and investigated during the Glen Canyon Project in the late 1950s and early 1960s. At the time of this report, these sites are in a state of disrepair as a result of natural and human induced factors. The most prevalent of these factors is the destruction of standing structural fabric by the unmonitered visitor. This destruction for the most part is unintentional and results from uneducated visitors climbing on the standing remains, digging for the purpose of defecation, or by the carrying off of pieces of the structural fabric for personal reward. There is however, intentional vandalism that is done out of malicious mischief, and which has resulted in significant destruction of the cultural fabric. The report finds that the continued existence of these sites is dependent upon numerous criteria centered around controlled visitation and conscientious cyclical maintenance programs. While past preservation practices have severely restricted the significance of these sites, certain degrees of integrity can be restored through the processes of restoration and reconstruction. The above recommendations provide a set of alternatives which will hopefully lead to a decisive course of action. The ultimate goal is 1) the continued preservation of the resource in addition, 2) providing information for useful interpretive programs, and 3) providing a valuable visitation experience to the public.
