Glen Canyon National Recreation Area for hundreds of miles, from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, encompassing scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history. In the fall of 1985, Nickens and Associates of Montrose, Colorado performed a monitoring inspection of six previously stabilized sites in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The work was conducted as part of the Year 3 activities of a multiyear ruins stabilization contract between Nickens and Associates and the National Park Service, Rocky Mountain Region. This report presents the results of the monitoring inspection. The six previously stabilized sites include four sites stabilized during Year 1 (Iceberg Granary/42SA378, Rappel Ruin/42SA683, Three Roof Ruin/42KA207, and Defiance House/42SA598) and two sites stabilized during Year 2 (Polaroid Site/42SA7338 and Widow's Ledge/42SA633). The monitoring assessed the condition of each structure, comparing it with its immediate post stabilization condition; evaluated the effectiveness of the stabilization work; and determined the nature of the ongoing deterioration factors. The results of the monitoring indicated that, with one exception, all the sites showed signs of deterioration, almost all of which was attributable to visitor use. It appeared that, although each site had been placed in a structurally sound condition as a result of the stabilization efforts, the success of this work was only temporary in nature due to the ongoing visitor impacts occurring at the sites. The insights gained from the monitoring findings resulted in the development of alternative management recommendations that are included in the report and that will hopefully correct this trend.
