In September 1987, Versar Inc. was contracted by the US Department of the Army, Sacramento District corps of Engineers to conduct an Asbestos Abatement Survey of the Presidio, Fort Mason, and the Presidio of San Francisco Reserve Center. Versar's scope of work included: 1. Inspect each building for Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM), 2. Develop a hazard assessment for each ACM identified, 3. Provide a code A cost estimate to abate each ACM and, 4. Develop a data base management system the collected for data. In May 1991, Ace Pacific company conducted a general review of the Versar survey and offered comment relative to the technical validity and reliability of the data for use by the National Park Service. Ace reviewed fifty-five (55) volumes of data which represent the "hard-copy" documentation of the Versar survey. The Ace Pacific Summary Report recommended a comprehensive review of the Versar data bases, updating of the data to reflect current conditions of the buildings and the development of a new abatement cost data.
