Prototype Building Assessments and Rehabilitation Studies: Presidio of San Francisco

As part of the continuing effort to convert the San Francisco Presidio from an Anny Installation to a National Park, the National Park Service (NPS) Denver Service Center engaged the services of Architectural Resources Group (ARG) to conduct a study of fortyfive historical buildings at the Presidio. The study was performed as Work Order 5 Building Assessments (Contract CX-2000-0-0030) under an indefinite quantities contract between NPS and ARG. The study was conducted to gain information into the important architectural features, general condition and significant characteristics, and the flexibility of the buildings for rehabilitation to new uses. The information gathered through this study has been compiled into loose leaf binders containing individual building assessments for the forty-five buildings. In recognizing the importance of the Presidio's historical resources, all of the buildings assessed are structures contributing to the Presidio of San Francisco National Historic Landmark District Nineteen of the buildings were the subject of an earlier Historic Structures Adaptive Reuse Study prepared for the Army Corps of Engineers by the firm of Page and Turnbull (P&T) in May 1989. These buildings were re-assessed to evaluate and up-date the information from the earlier study to meet the specific requirements of this study. The forty-five buildings assessed in this study represent many building types and styles found at the Presidio. The buildings selected for this study were chosen because they represent a broad spectrum of the historical buildings on the installation. Many of them are "prototype buildings," or buildings nearly identical in size, construction type and construction period, to others at the Presidio. Several of the buildings studied are very similar to other Presidio buildings, although they are not considered to be prototype buildings. While the impact to specific buildings is considered in this particular study, the results are applicable to similar buildings with similar conditions, such that the results of the study can be applied to approximately 130 buildings at the Presidio. In addition to the buildings taken from the Page and Turnbull study and prototype buildings, other historical buildings susceptible to having a change of use in the near future were selected for this study.
