Cultural Landscape Analysis: Presidio of San Francisco
Land and Community Associates and Architectural Resources Group. 1992. Cultural Landscape Analysis: Presidio of San Francisco. Cultural Landscape Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Denver Service Center. Denver, Colorado
This report accompanies a series of Presidio of San Francisco Cultural Landscape Analysis maps delivered in partial fulfillment of Contract # CX-2000-0-0030 with the Denver Service Center, National Park Service, under a sub-contract with Architectural Resources Group of San Francisco. The report explains the scope of work for this project task, the manner in which the work was accomplished, and the general findings. It is not meant to replace the maps produced during the project or a more detailed analysis of those submittals. The purpose of the Cultural Landscape Analysis was to provide the National Park Service Presidio Planning Team with technical assistance and a comprehensive cultural landscape database. The intent of the analysis was to establish a clear understanding of the development of the cultural landscape of the Presidio as part of information gathering for the General Management Plan process. Portions of the Presidio Cultural Landscape Analysis may need to be developed further as components of a subsequent Cultural Landscape Report. The Cultural Landscape Analysis was a Presidio-wide general investigation conducted and mapped at a scale of 1”= 400’. The analysis was composed of three phases. The first phase included research and development of the cultural landscape description and chronology based on NPS-supplied copies of historic documents. The second phase included determination of surviving cultural landscape areas and sub areas and assessment of the condition and integrity of the cultural landscape. The third phase included a determination of character-defining elements and features of twenty-eight major areas of the Presidio. All work followed the guidelines of Cultural Resource Management Guidelines NPS-28, National Register Bulletin 18: “How to Evaluate and Nominate Designed Historic Landscapes,” and National Register Bulletin 30: “Guidelines for Documenting and Evaluating Rural Historic Landscapes.” The Cultural Landscape Analysis report is divided into three major parts: project background information, Section 1.0; a description of the analysis and findings, Sections 2.0 through Section 6.0; and survey documentation, Appendices A, B, and C. Sections 2.0 through 4.0 include data collection, research, and development of the cultural landscape description and chronology; determination of surviving cultural landscape areas and sub areas; assessment of the condition and integrity of the cultural landscape; and an analysis to determine the sensitivity to change of areas and systems. Section 5.0 is a description of character-defining elements and features of the twenty-eight major areas of the Presidio. Section 5.0 is a description of character-defining elements and features of the twenty-eight major areas of the Presidio. Section 6.0 is the bibliography. The appendices include survey documentation of evaluations of landscapes, architecture, and historic events and associations, as well as a list of maps produced during the analysis and a list of mapping sources utilized in the development of the cultural landscape chronology mapping. This report does not include any maps, plans, or graphics produced during the project.
