Chickering P and Jenkins MA. 1994. Historic Structures Report, History Section: Bldgs. 32, 33, 33a, 34/45, 34a, and 36. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This historic structure report concerns Buildings No. 32, 33, 33a, 34/45, 34a, and 36 of Package 116 in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Of all structures or groups of structures in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Package 116 is the most emblematic of nineteenth century Harpers Ferry. The physical structures spanned the century, during which occupants included national and local government officials, the military, local and regional entrepreneurs, politicians, the socially prominent, middle and working-class residents, and transient laborers. The buildings housed stores of various descriptions, light industry in the form of a bottling works and a bakery, a restaurant, a pool hall, perhaps a drinking establishment, and even the United States Post Office. Like other local buildings, the structures hold remnants of long-gone buildings (the stone sills in Building 33 came from Hall's Rifle Works, for example). Their appearance, with only minor alterations since park acquisition, provides a valid view of the town at the end of the nineteenth century.
