Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This historic structures report details the archeological information performed on Buildings No. 32, 33, 33a, 34, 34a, and 35 in the Lower Town area of Harpers Ferry. Archeology by the National Park Service for Package 116, Block B, Lots 2 and 3, in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, began in late May, 1989, to provide interpretive data for the exterior restoration of Park Buildings 32, 33, 33A, 34, 34A, and 35. Archeological investigations in the backyards demonstrated that Park Building 32 was constructed in 1877 on a previously built foundation. The date of the earlier foundation is unknown. At the entrance to a narrow alleyway between Park Buildings 34 and 35, a shale step and riser were found which date to the McGraw 1891 construction phase. Park Building 34A, once used as a smokehouse, no longer served this function by 1891, as cellar fill and construction debris covered the air intake below the original door sill. This fill and debris overlay an 1870 brick pavement constructed by McGraw, thus blocking the smokehouse intake. As a result, the current smokehouse entry was raised 1.1 ft to its present level. No remains of 1891 porch posts behind Park Buildings 34-35 were found, and they probably never existed, although shale slabs for the footings of early 20th century supports were located.
