Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This historic structures report concerns Buildings No. 34, 35, and 34a of Package 116 in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Originally, Building 35 was a two-and-a-half story residence and apothecary erected in 1812 by Joseph Annin. There are several theories surrounding the dates of construction for the Building 34 addition which range between 1815 to 1884. James McGraw subsequently added a third story and the rear stone wings in 1891-92. Building 34A is the only historic outbuilding that remains in the rear yard of Building 34-35. The three-story structure probably dates to 1834 when it was described as a one-story stone smokehouse. Apparently, McGraw added its second story in the 1870's. Its present appearance dates to 1891-92 when James McGraw enlarged the structure with a third brick story. The buildings exhibit a high degree of architectural integrity. The structures retain their essential late nineteenth century materials, form and character. The exterior basically maintains its historic fabric with the exception of the rear wood porch which was removed in 1956 and the shutters that were removed circa 1972. The interior plans remain essentially intact.
