Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This historic structures report concerns Buildings No. 32, 33, and 33a of Package 116 in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Buildings 32, 33, and 33A are important because they contribute as historic elements of the Harpers Ferry townscape and its physical and cultural histories. These structures are intrinsically related to the other Package 116 buildings (34-35, 34A and 36), and extend their story of the armory presence and Civil War (1812-1865) to the post-war commercial-industrial success and decline of one of Harpers Ferry's most prominent families (1869-1897). The exterior will be restored to its 1890' s appearance according to documentation, without reconstructing missing elements for which there is no physical evidence. The front portion of Building 33's first floor will be used for an exhibit on the evolution of the town, to be designed by the Harpers Ferry Center. The rear portion will provide dispatch, first aid, a disabled-accessible restroom, and a visitor contact area, as part of the visitor protection facilities. The stair hall on the east side of the building will be restored. The second and third floors of Building 33 will be rehabilitated to provide for park offices with the second floor accessible by elevator and nearly all spaces within fullyaccessible. The fourth floor will be rehabilitated· for storage. All historic windows, doors, and millwork in the building will be preserved or restored. The first floor of Building 33A will contain a consultation room and storage for visitor protection staff use, and a fully accessible elevator to the second floor offices. The upper floors will be used for elevator and mechanical equipment and storage. Building 32 will hold fire cache storage on the ground floor and mechanical equipment for environmental controls above. All of the buildings will require structural reinforcement. A ramp will be provided between Buildings 33 and 34 for equal disabled-access to Buildings 33, 33A, 34-35 and the backyards.
