Summary: "Markosky undertook a reconnaissance level survey of previously undocumented historic resources that are 45 years old or older within Braxton County from June 1st through 4th. The survey is the fourth installment of the multi-county project, the Historic Resources Survey of Tyler, Ritchie, Gilmer, Braxton, and Doddridge Counties, and it was conducted on behalf of the WV SHPO. The survey resulted in the identification of 150 newly recorded historic resources: BX-0390 through BX-0537, as well as cemeteries 46BX136, 46BX137, and 46BX138. The county seat of Sutton and incorporated communities were excluded from the survey in favor of compiling a collection of newly surveyed resources that characterizes the rural, hilly, and heavily wooded areas in Braxton County that lie outside of these centers. Of the 150 historic resources surveyed, 114 or 76% were residential buildings. The vast majority of resources - 134 or 89% - date from the 20th century. Among the most commonly seen building types were side gable cottages and ranches." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office, Department of Arts, Culture, and History, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number P20AF00057).
