Final Historic Resources Survey of Ritchie County, West Virginia

Williams EH and Ricketts LC. 2020. Final Historic Resources Survey of Ritchie County, West Virginia. West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office, Department of Arts, Culture, and History; The Markosky Engineering Group, Inc.

Summary: "Markosky undertook a reconnaissance level survey of previously undocumented historic resources that are 45 year old or older within Ritchie County from October 21st to 24th. The survey is the second installment of the multi-county project, the Historic Resources Survey of Tyler, Ritchie, Gilmer, Braxton, and Doddridge Counties, and it was conducted on behalf of the WV SHPO. The survey resulted in the identification of 151 newly recorded historic resources. Of the 151 historic resources surveyed, residential resources were in the majority with 73 houses and 50 farms (with farmhouses) combining to make up more than 80% of the survey. More than half of the resources (58%) dated to the 19th century ranging from ca. 1830 to ca. 1890. Just under 25% of the surveyed resources were recommended for further research to determine whether they were eligible for NRHP listing under Criterion A for their association with agriculture, commerce, or education within Ritchie County or under Criterion C for their architectural merit. No new historic districts were identified. " Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office, Department of Arts, Culture, and History, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number P20AF00057).
