The Cumberland Piedmont I & M Network (CUPN) monitors forest vegetation in long-term plots on fourteen national park units in the Southeast region of the United States. These parks are: Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park (ABLI), Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site (CARL), Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park (CHCH), Cowpens National Battlefield (COWP), Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (CUGA), Fort Donelson National Battlefield (FODO), Guilford Courthouse National Military Park (GUCO), Kings Mountain National Military Park (KIMO), Little River Canyon National Preserve (LIRI), Mammoth Cave National Park (MACA), Ninety Six National Historical Site (NISI), Russell Cave National Monument (RUCA), Shiloh National Military Park (SHIL), and Stones River National Battlefield (STRI). Each park has between 24 and 60 plots, scaled for the size of the park. This project contains all information associated with the monitoring protocol and its products. Vegetation communities are monitored in permanently-marked plots that are randomly located within naturally forested areas of parks. Plots are 20 x 20 meters in size, and within them, data are collected on species richness, per-species coverage, per-species frequency and several forest-related metrics. Data collection is intensive, with data being grouped into the following broad categories: plot characteristics (slope, landform, etc.); species presence; frequency and cover (tree, sapling, seedling and herb layers); canopy cover; tree growth and health; evidence of forest pests, snags, and coarse woody debris (CWD); and community characterization/classification.
