The South Florida/Caribbean Network (SFCN) conducts long-term mangrove soil elevation table monitoring as part of the nationwide Inventory and Monitoring Division of the National Park Service. Mangrove wetlands provide flood control, storm protection, shore stabilization, water filtration (capturing soil runoff), carbon sequestration, and habitat for fish and wildlife communities. There is a feedback loop between soil elevation, hydrology, and mangrove forest health. Due to the importance of soil elevation to mangroves, it is critical to understand the rate of change in soil elevation to better predict the long-term ability of mangrove forests to regenerate. The measurable objectives of the project are to determine mangrove forest soil surface elevation trajectories over time (e.g., decades) at specific intertidal mature mangrove forest sites, and to determine if mangrove forest soil surface elevations at specific intertidal mature mangrove forest sites are keeping pace with regional relative sea level rise. Sampling is performed using SET instruments designed to temporarily attach to a permanent benchmark and fiberglass pins are lowered to measure the distance to the sediment surface. Monitoring occurs twice a year, allowing for a more representative estimate of the annual soil elevation by including seasonal variation and allowing the SFCN to understand the contribution of hurricanes to the wetland soil surface by sampling before and after hurricane season. This project is a repository for all datasets, protocols, reports, and other types of publications pertaining to Surface Elevation Table (SET) monitoring at Biscayne National Park, Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, and Virgin Islands National Parks.
