Enabling Quantitative Management of the Maryland and Virginia Coastal Bays through Bathymetry and Sediment Mapping
Schupp C and Wells D. Enabling Quantitative Management of the Maryland and Virginia Coastal Bays through Bathymetry and Sediment Mapping. 2007-2013
ASIS has partnered with the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) to collect bathymetry and sediment data for the Maryland and Virginia Coastal Bays. Funding for the project is provided by the NPS Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network Inventory and Monitoring Program. This project will enable ASIS to manage and protect all of its estuarine waters equally and as one holistic system by providing the missing information on the National Seashore’s estuarine resources in Virginia. The information will be integrated into ongoing research efforts to address several specific management concerns in a quantitative manner. Following the successful methods used by MGS in the Maryland Coastal Bays, ASIS will collect and map sediment samples, and MGS will conduct bathymetric surveys and analyze sediment samples. The two-year project, which began in October 2006, will include field work, preparation and analysis of the sediment samples, post-processing and reduction of bathymetry data, and data analysis. Deliverables will include a final report and maps in addition to valuable geospatial datasets, which will be used in multiple ongoing research and management efforts by both the Seashore and park partners, including other Federal agencies, State and local groups.
