Fort Sumter is a masonry seacoast fort of the Third System of Seacoast Defense. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter—generally considered to be the inaugural battle of the Civil War—wherein the North Carolina Militia bombarded the federal garrison at the fort. This excavation report details the excavation work done at Fort Sumter over the course of June 17–30, 1955. The objectives of the work were to uncover remaining portions of the first floor of the left flank enlisted men's barracks for preservation and interpretation in accord with National Park concepts and the area Master Plan.
