Fort Sumter is a masonry seacoast fort of the Third System of Seacoast Defense. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter—generally considered to be the inaugural battle of the Civil War—wherein the North Carolina Militia bombarded the federal garrison at the fort. This report details the excavation work done at Fort Sumter from December 29, 1958 through May 13, 1959. The contract called for the removal of fill materials from the following areas of the fort: north and west of Battery Ruger, adjacent to and paralleling the salient and right face gunrooms, and the esplanade west of the comfort station. In addition, it specified that the contractor relocate two large guns, disassemble and remove the Anderson Flagpole Memorial, relocate the Federal Garrison Monument, demolish concrete and brick masonry, salvage brick and steel handrails, and relocate some dry rubble masonry.
