Fort Sumter is a masonry seacoast fort of the Third System of Seacoast Defense. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter—generally considered to be the inaugural battle of the Civil War—wherein the North Carolina Militia bombarded the federal garrison at the fort. This excavation report details the excavation work done at Fort Sumter over the course of March 27–May 28, 1957. The project was undertaken in order to open more of the left flank enlisted men's barracks, which had been partially uncovered in the summer of 1955.
