Fort Sumter is a masonry seacoast fort of the Third System of Seacoast Defense. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter—generally considered to be the inaugural battle of the Civil War—wherein the North Carolina Militia bombarded the federal garrison at the fort. This excavation report details the excavation work done at Fort Sumter over the course of May 7–June 21, 1956. The objective of hte work was to uncover the first floor of the southwestern half of the three story building which paralleled the gorge wall, in which the officers' quarters and various administrative and supply functions had previously been housed.
