Fort Sumter is a masonry seacoast fort of the Third System of Seacoast Defense. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter—generally considered to be the inaugural battle of the Civil War—wherein the North Carolina Militia bombarded the federal garrison at the fort. This excavation report details the excavation work done at Fort Sumter over the course of August 7 – October 18, 1951 and May 6 – June 20, 1952. This work was focused on the section of the interior lying between the interior sally-port entrance and the gorge wall, where all fill materials and post-war objects were to be removed.
