Ruins Stabilization Activities at Seven Prehistoric Sites Along the Green and Colorado Rivers, Canyonlands National Park: Report of Year 4 Field Season, 1986

Firor J and Eininger S. 1987. Ruins Stabilization Activities at Seven Prehistoric Sites Along the Green and Colorado Rivers, Canyonlands National Park: Report of Year 4 Field Season, 1986. Historic Structure Report. Ruins Stabilization Report Technical Series No. 39. Nickens and Associates. Montrose, Colorado

This report documents the Year 4 stabilization work performed in Canyonlands National Park along the Green and Colorado Rivers. The primary goal of the project was the continued preservation of six sites and any remaining archaeological materials within. The stabilization tasks were designed to place each site in a structurally-sound condition and prevent future deterioration. Emphasis was also placed on data retrieval, to both ensure adequate documentation of the stabilization tasks themselves and to compile archaeological and architectural information. A total of 19 workdays between October 6 and October 28, 1986 was utilized to complete prestabilization and stabilization tasks for the project. For the most part, the structures remained in stable condition at the time of this work. The sites receive moderate to heavy visitation during summer and consequently exhibit a near total lack of surface artifacts, due to unintentional visitor-induced structural deterioration and, in some cases, vandalism. In addition to the effects of visitation, unstable portions were the result of weathering, natural structural decay, and rodent activity. A description of Canyonlands National Park, including its cultural history and previous archaeological research, was provided in an earlier stabilization report.
