NPS staff at Assateague Island National Seashore works collaboratively with marine stranding network partners in MD: The Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Program (run by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD-DNR), through the Cooperative Oxford Laboratory in Maryland) and the National Aquarium. ASIS staff compiled annual reports (from MD-DNR data) on marine strandings from 1994-2009, and a summary for 2010-2023 was put together to provide a final report. As of 2024, all marine stranding data and information from animals that strand at ASIS is retained by MD-DNR and the National Aquarium, as the official stranding response networks that report directly to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). They are working together with ASIS on a NPS Research Permit (2025-2030) that defines responsibilities, communication, etc. during strandings and will have minimal annual reporting requirements.
