Develop and test Mojave native plant materials
Engel C and Abella S. Develop and test Mojave native plant materials. 2010-2013
This 3 year project examined the interactions of carbon additions, light intensity and native and non-native plant success following a large fire in the Mojave Desert. This project had 5 goals:1) Developing a threshold of estimated native shrub cover necessary to reduce red brome (Bromus rubens) abundance through limited light availability, 2) Examine whether limiting nitrogen availability achieved through carbon addition can reduce red brome invasion, as has been shown to work in other exotic dominated communities, 3) Study the effects of light reduction and carbon addition on the native plant community, 4) Determine whether on-site native annual plant species can outcompete red brome across a range of densities, and 5) Develop models for which common native and early successional perennial species respond best to outplanting, and determine density specific competitive interactions with red brome and any other native or exotic plant species.
